A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that covers a damaged tooth, restoring how it looks and functions. There is a recovery period after the procedure, but in a few days, any irritation, sensitivity, inflammation, or pain you’re experiencing should subside. To help you manage your discomfort, here is some guidance on dental crown aftercare in the days following your initial appointment.
What to Expect After Getting Dental Crowns
In the days and even weeks after your procedure, the tissue around the crown may be tender and inflamed. You may experience minor sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet drinks and foods.
If the pain extends past several weeks or worsens, make an appointment with your dentist. While discomfort after treatment is typical, in some cases, the crown may need adjusting to properly fit in your mouth.
A Guide to Alleviating Post-Procedure Discomfort
Fortunately, there are several accessible ways you can relieve your pain in the oncoming days after treatment.
For one, many dentists recommend warm saltwater rinses twice a day (or more) for at least three days if the tissue around the affected area is particularly irritated. Mix half a teaspoon of salt into a cup of warm water and swish it around your mouth for ten to twelve seconds before spitting it out.
Another option is to get over-the-counter painkillers or topical anesthetic gels to use as needed or swapping to a toothpaste for sensitive teeth.
How to Increase Dental Crown Longevity
Good oral hygiene habits and meticulous cleaning around your dental crown go a long way to extending its lifespan. Thorough and gentle brushing, flossing, and mouthwash twice a day are key to keeping your teeth healthy.
For the following days after your procedure, avoid chewing on that side of your mouth and eating extremely cold, hot, hard, or sticky foods. Additionally, try not to lift your floss vertically, as you may dislodge your crown.
Even after your dental crown is fully set and adjusted, steer clear of hard and sticky foods, maintain a balanced diet and a regular hygiene routine, and routinely visit your dentist for cleanings and checkups.
