Phase 1 Orthodontics
Phase 1 orthodontics is a type of care applied to a young patient who still has their baby teeth to correct any alignment problems as well as prevent any that might pop up in their adult teeth. The baby teeth actually set the path for the incoming adult teeth, so if they are crooked, the adult teeth will likely be as well. Using a combination of removable oral appliances, we can drastically improve the alignment of the teeth, ensure the adult teeth come in straight, and shorten a child’s overall orthodontic treatment time.
Traditional Braces
When you hear the word “orthodontics,” the image of traditional metal braces probably comes to mind, right? Today, they still offer one of the most effective, durable, and affordable solutions for solving simple and complex alignment issues in the teeth and jaws. They are ideal for younger patients because of their strength, but they can also help adult patients with more complicated issues avoid surgery by providing an effective, non-invasive treatment.

Invisalign® Clear Braces
With Invisalign®, you can give a presentation at work or meet up with friends without anyone noticing you’re straightening your teeth. The treatment uses a series of clear plastic aligner trays that slowly bring the teeth into their new positions. The aligners themselves are thin, lightweight, and completely see-through. They are also easily removable, meaning that you can take them out whenever it’s time to eat or brush your teeth and that Invisalign is able to work with absolutely any lifestyle.
Invisalign® TEEN Clear Aligners
As you can imagine, many teens in need of orthodontic treatment would rather NOT get bulky metal braces, and Invisalign® TEEN offers the perfect alternative. Just like with regular Invisalign®, the teeth are moved using practically invisible aligner trays, and each one has a small blue indicator on it that fades as it is worn. This helps the teen and their parents make sure the trays are being used as much as they should, keeping the treatment on track. Plus, Invisalign TEEN also comes with six FREE replacement trays in case one ever gets broken or “lost.”
iTero Integrated Invisalign®
The first step to creating a personalized Invisalign® treatment is to take an impression of a patient’s teeth, and instead of having them bite into a mold filled with gooey dental putty, we instead use our iTero Scanner. This allows us to create the perfect impression in minutes just by scanning the teeth with a device that’s slightly larger than a pen. Compared to the old way, this method of taking an impression is much faster, more comfortable, and extremely accurate, leading to a higher quality treatment.
Palatal Expanders
For many patients, the roof of their mouth (the hard palate) is quite narrow, which can lead to the teeth not having enough room to come in straight, creating crowding. Fortunately, a palatal expander allows us to gently increase the size of the hard palate. A small metal bar is placed into the mouth and slowly widened to direct bone growth. This can prevent new crowding from developing and give our team the necessary room to move the upper teeth into better positions.
Fixed Retainers
A fixed retainer is a small metal appliance that is applied to the back of certain teeth after braces or an Invisalign treatment has been completed. This keeps the newly shifted teeth from drifting back into their original positions. Fixed retainers are extremely small, and with minimal maintenance, they can ensure a patient’s teeth stay completely still for the rest of their life.
Removable Retainers
After a patient has completed orthodontic treatment, Dr. Bygness will recommend that they wear a retainer so their teeth will stay in their new positions. Removable retainers are typically made of plastic and metal, and they are customized to fit comfortably into the mouth. At first, a patient will be advised to wear their retainer all the time, and after a few months, it will only need to be used when they go to bed.
